The cash rich league’s 2020 edition has passed its halfway mark and we have witnessed some arguable decisions by umpires which have changed the game.
Let’s take a look at the top 3 most controversial decisions taken by umpires in the IPL 2020.
Short Run Call During Delhi Capitals vs Kings XI Punjab
In the first match of the Kings XI Punjab which was lost by KXIP in a super over, the most controversial moment happened which cost KXIP two precious points against the Delhi Capitals (DC). It was the inaugural match of both the teams which tied and led to super over. However, before entering the super over, the camera footage showed that the square leg umpire Nitin Mohan mistakenly called Chris Jordan for a short run in the third ball of the 19th over. Kagiso Rabada was bowling that over.
In the replay, it can be clearly seen that Jordan’s bat was inside the crease when he took first run from non striker end but this run was not included in the total. That decision was not reversed. In the last over, KXIP needed 13 runs and Mayanak Agarwal made 12 runs on the first three balls. Later, KXIP lost two wicktes and one ball was dot ball so the match went to super over. If the short run was added to their total, Punjab would have won the match with three balls in hand but that controversial decision cost them two crucial points.
MS Dhoni’s Protest against Wide Ball made umpire changing his Decision
Whenever, Chennai Super Kings enters in the ground to play a match, the center of focus is MS Dhoni. In the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), MS Dhoni became a hot potato due to his reaction towards the umpire.
In the match 29 of IPL 2020 between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), SRH was chasing down and in the 19th over, Shardul Thakur bowled a wide yorker and camera footage also clarified that the ball was wide. Umpire Paul Reiffel was on straight end, he tried to stretch his arms to give a wide signal but then MS Dhoni started protesting against the decision. Paul Reiffel changed his mind and declared that ball is legitimate delivery and CSK won that match by 20 runs.
After Given Out, Tom Curran Called Back in RR vs CSK Match
Another controversial incident happened in IPL 2020 during the match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
It happened in the 18th over of the match during Rajasthan’s innings when Tom Curran was given LBW by the umpire, Chettithody Shamshuddin. Tom Curran was not happy with that decision and asked for a review but he could not use the facility as Rahul Tewatia already used the review option and Curran had to move to the dressing room.
However, umpires started discussing the decision and Dhoni approached them also to know how an out decision can be reviewed. Later, umpires decided to review the catch taken by Dhoni and the third umpire clarified that there was not any connection between bat and the ball. The decision was reversed and the third umpire allowed Tom Curran to come back and bat once again.
